MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Wisconsin wildlife officials say someone either stomped to death or crushed 25 chicks that belong to an endangered species. The endangered common terns were killed on an island in Lake Butte des Morts near Oshkosh. DNR spokeswoman Joanne Haas says the chicks were discovered Tuesday night. She estimates they were between 2 and 21 days old. Haas says the agency would like anyone with information about the case to contact it. Anyone who intentionally kills an endangered animal can be fined between $2,000 and $5,000 and sentenced to up to nine months in jail.
