The Dodge County Sheriff’s Office is seeking information on the thefts of grave markers honoring Veterans from local cemeteries: Oakwood Cemetery on Hwy 33 just east of Hwy 151 in the Township of Beaver Dam and Stone Hill Cemetery on County Trunk E near State Hwy 26 in the Township of Burnett. A total of 78 markers were reported stolen between the two cemeteries with a total value of approximately $3,750.00. There may be additional markers that have been stolen that are yet to be reported. These markers signify the service of the deceased veterans and are placed near the headstone. The markers can consist of brass but may also be made of cast iron or other valuable metals. Generally, these markers should not be in a person’s home or in their possession. Therefore, the markers are of value to recycling centers or second hand stores. Local scrap yards and recycling businesses have been contacted. Also, a state crime alert has been disseminated to all law enforcement agencies. Dodge County Sheriff Patricia Ninmann is asking the public be vigilant and alert to suspicious activities around or near cemeteries. If suspicious activity is observed do not try to apprehend these subjects. Attempt to safely collect as much information as possible, and contact the appropriate law enforcement agency. If you are witnessing a crime in progress, dial 911. The Dodge County Sheriff’s Office is actively working on this case and has developed some persons of interest. We are asking for assistance from the public in identifying these criminals and the return of these markers to the appropriate grave sites.
