State Justice Department statement:
The Department of Justice Division of Criminal Investigation continues our investigation into the events that led to the tragic death of a Wisconsin State Patrol Trooper on Tuesday, March 24, 2015 in Fond du Lac. About 5:30 p.m. in Fond du Lac, Trooper Trevor Casper was following a vehicle matching the description of the one used in a bank robbery earlier in the day in Marinette County. During an encounter, gunfire was exchanged, fatally wounding both Trooper Casper and the suspect, Steven Timothy Snyder. Notifications were made to Trooper Casper’s family in Wisconsin and Snyder’s family in Michigan. We continue to investigate how several crimes that occurred Tuesday in both Marinette County and in the city of Fond du Lac, fit together. Autopsies on Trooper Casper and Snyder are expected to be completed today and likely will assist in determining what occurred during the confrontation. The Department of Justice is leading this investigation and we expect to have an update by mid-afternoon today and we will share that with you via e-mail. We at the Department of Justice are grieving the loss of Trooper Casper along with the entire Wisconsin law enforcement community.
