All dogs in the Fond du Lac Animal Shelter or arriving at the shelter are being vaccinated for canine flu following an outbreak that has sickened many dogs in the Midwest. More than 1,000 dogs in Wisconsin, Illinois, Ohio and Indiana have come down with the illness. Animal Shelter manager, Renee Webb, sasy the virus has been identified as H3N2, which is believed to have come from Asia and its not yet known how effective the current vaccines are against this strain. The virus can cause persistent cough, runny nose and fever in dogs. A small percentage will develop more severe symptoms. Veterinarians are cautioning pet owners to keep their dogs from going nose to nose with other four-legged friends.
