Nobody was injured in a fire that destroyed a vacant former convent in Fond du Lac Friday evening. Firefighters were called to the scene on the corner of Division and Amory Streets to find heavy fire in the attic and roof area of the massive brick building. Firefighters quickly attacked the flames pouring water on nearly all sides. Fire Chief Pete O’Leary told WFDL news on the scene firefighters were battling a fire that destroyed a garage at a Martin Avenue residence when they were called to the near downtown building fire. O’Leary says the cause of the fire is unknown, but says because the building was vacant it is suspicious. Nobody was believed to be inside the building. Firefighters were able to make progress knocking down the flames after a little less than an hour. Police had blocked off the area to traffic. The fire department received mutual aid from other area departments.
