Five people were injured one seriously in a three vehicle crash on Highway 23 east of Fond du Lac. At 1106am on Wednesday, the Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Office along with the Wisconsin State Patrol responded to a report that a Semi tractor trailer unit had collided head-on with 2 vehicles on Hwy 23 east of Tower Rd in the Town of Empire. Evidence at the scene indicated the westbound Semi tractor trailer unit driven by a 59 yr. old male from Merrill, Wisconsin traveled left of the center line and first struck an eastbound vehicle driven by a 57 yr. old male from the New London area and then struck a second eastbound vehicle driven by a 48 yr. old female from the Fond du Lac area. As a result of the impact this vehicle entered the ditch and rolled over several times ejecting a 74 yr. old male backseat passenger. The operator and a 72 yr. old front seat female passenger had to be extricated from the vehicle and were transported to St. Agnes Hospital for treatment of their injuries. The 74 yr. old male was flown by Theda Star Helicopter to Theda Clark Hospital for serious injuries. The operator of the first vehicle struck and a 65 yr. old female passenger were transported to St. Agnes Hospital for their injuries as well. The operator of the semi tractor trailer unit was not injured. The Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Office and the Wisconsin State Patrol were assisted at the scene by the Mt. Calvary Ambulance and Fire Department, the City of Fond du Lac Fire Department and Paramedic Units and Theda Star Helicopters. The accident remains under investigation.
