The Fond du Lac city council has approved a food truck ordinance but postponed action on an ordinance regulating so-called pedal pubs. City officials say the mobile food vendor ordinance is designed to allow greater flexibility and opportunities for food trucks. The council voted to postpone until their next meeting an ordinance regulating pedal pubs or quadricycles. The council directed the city attorney to address several concerns in the ordinance including hours of operation, behavior of participants, accountability should problems arise, and allowing people to rent the pedal pub without alcohol for family outings. Opponents have argued the pedal pubs would encourage binge drinking. Councilmember Catherine Block countered that not everybody will be drinking that much alcohol and if people binge drink, they already do it in a bar or at home. Councilmember Brian Kolstad says he thinks it can work. “But we also want to try to discourage bad behavior. It inevitably comes down to the responsibility of the adults,” Kolstad told WFDL news. “If there are disturbances its going to come down to his (pedal pub owner) license and they’re going to want to protect that so they’ll want their passengers to behave.” Pedal Pubs are multi-person bicycles that can hold up to a dozen riders and driver that steers. State law allows each passenger to consume up to 36 fluid ounces of alcohol during their ride.
