The Fond du Lac police department says retired K-9 officer “Grendel” has been euthanized due to a serious and deteriorating health problem. Grendel and his handler Officer Ryan Williams were both shot and critically injured in March of 2011 by a gunman who shot and killed officer Craig Birkholz. Grendel was officially retired from the department in April of last year after eight years on the force. A police press release says Williams took Grendel for one last brief training exercise at Steinig Tal Kennels near Campbellsport. Grendel was buried in the pet cemetery at Rienzi Cemetery.
