MADISON, Wis. (AP) — The state Senate’s judiciary committee has signed off on a bill that would require police who find an opiate prescription at an overdose scene to enter it into a statewide database. The committee approved the proposal on a 5-0 vote Wednesday. The bill is part of a package of legislation from Representative John Nygren designed to combat prescription drug abuse leading to heroin habits. The other proposals would require opiate dispensers to enter prescriptions into the database within 24 hours, require methadone and pain clinics to register with the state and require treatment programs using methadone to report the number of people receiving the medication annually to the state. All four bills are now ready for a vote in either the Assembly or Senate.
