The Dodge County Sheriff says over the last few weeks local business owners have been the target of a phone scam. Sheriff Dale Schmidt says the scammer calls the business and claims they are from the local utility company. Schmidt says the scam began targeting WE Energies customers and has grown to include Waupun Utilities and now most recently Juneau Utilities customers. “The caller claims the customer is behind on their utility bill and threaten to shut off their power if they do not immediately pay, using a prepaid debit card. “They say they got to pay them an amount, roughly $800 and if they don’t do that they’re going to shut off their power,” Schmidt told WFDL news. “Fortunately the couple (businesses) that have called me have both picked up on the scam and refused to give any money.”
