12-14-15 uw leaders’ diversity meeting with students falls through

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — A meeting between University of Wisconsin leaders and a student group demanding more efforts to recognize diversity on campus has fallen through.  UW System President Ray Cross and regents President Regina Miller were slated to meet with about 20 students after a regents meeting Friday morning to discuss demands for a diversity task force, more mental health professionals of color on campus and mandatory racial awareness training.  Miller issued a statement Friday afternoon saying the students canceled what she called an important private meeting. Student leader Nneka Akubeze said in an email to The Associated Press that the UW officials refused to honor the student’s request to allow the media to attend or to record the proceedings.  System spokesman Alex Hummel says the participants had agreed to a private meeting.
