A public memorial service will be held this weekend for longtime former Fond du Lac police chief and county board supervisor Mel Heller. Heller died last Friday at the age of 90. Heller joined the Fond du Lac police department in 1949 as a motorcycle patrolman. He was promoted to detective in 1963 and was named acting chief in 1975. He was appointed the permanent police chief in 1976 and served as chief until he retired in 1990. He was first elected to the county board in 1992 and served on the board until 2012. A public memorial service will be held at 11am Saturday at Hope Lutheran Church in Fond du Lac.
