MADISON, Wis. (AP) — A University of Wisconsin System regents committee has approved UW-Madison’s new tenure policy. Republican legislators stripped tenure protections out of Wisconsin law last year. The Board of Regents last month adopted a new policy that allows schools to lay off tenured faculty in financial emergencies and for educational consideration and requires performance evaluations. The policy allows each school to adopt its own policy reflecting those rules. UW-Madison’s policy ensures laid off or fired faculty be given up to a year’s severance and requires the chancellor to consider other budget reduction options short of lay-offs or terminations. The regents’ education committee signed off on the policy Thursday during a meeting at UW-Green Bay. The full Board of Regents will vote on the policy Friday.
