Moraine Park Technical College’s Corrections Club will be hosting the Milwaukee House of Correction K-9 Unit on Monday, April 25. The event will take place from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Moraine Park’s Fond du Lac campus cafeteria and give attendees a look at the highly skilled K-9 operations used in the criminal justice field. Milwaukee’s K-9 unit consists of 11 teams that provide safety and security within a 1,500-bed direct supervision correctional facility. Besides the duties, the teams perform inside the House of Correction, the unit provides mutual aid to other agencies throughout the state and public demonstration to a variety of different audiences. All of the K-9s are imported German Shepherds that are certified in dual purpose work, patrol and narcotics. The unit also has a K-9 that can detect cell phones and one that can detect firearms. In March, a K-9 certified in sniffing people was also added.
