1-27-17 fdl county sheriff’s office says atv operators were trying to elude police

The Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Office says its fortunate that nobody was injured when an ATV broke through the ice on Lake Winnebago last weekend.  The operator was tossed into open water on the lake when his ATV struck an ice shove on the southeast side of the lake.  But Sheriff’s captain Ryan Waldschmidt says the two ATV operators fled before law enforcement arrived, apparently because they had been drinking.  “They could hear the sirens and see the lights, I’m sure, and now they’re not coming in by us and not taking the quickest, shortest route to shore,”  Waldschmidt told WFDL news. Waldschmidt says officers stationed near Lakeside Park west as the ATV operators tried to elude them.  “We were listening between our deputies and the police officers to the buzz of the motors out on the ice.  They couldn’t see them because of the fog but a couple of times officers from the police department could hear them.  They would shut their ATV motors off and were arguing about where are the cops and where I we going to get back to shore?”   One of the operators, a 24 year old Fond du lac man was arrested for operating an ATV while intoxicated.
