3-10-17 state senator says mandatory reporting bill doesn’t go far enough

A Democratic state senator says a bill that would force guards at Wisconsin’s troubled Lincoln Hills youth prison to report child abuse doesn’t go far enough.  Bill sponsor Democratic senator LaTonya Johnson calls the proposal a first step to fix what she calls a broke juvenile justice system.  But senator Lena Taylor says the bill doesn’t do anything to stop the abuse at the youth prisons.  Taylor says the legislature hasn’t begun to address any of the problems that caused the FBI to raid the juvenile facility a year and a half ago.   Taylor says she would also like to see the state expand the trauma informed care base approach with the Grow Academy.  The FBI is investigating allegations of widespread abuse of juveniles at the prison near Irma.  Inmates have filed two federal lawsuits challenging conditions at the prison and demanding improvements.  Taylor made the comments on AM 1170 WFDL’s Between the Lines program.
