MADISON, Wis. (AP) — A sign a Republican lawmaker admitted removing from the state Capitol didn’t say quite what he said it did. The sign was on display in May when Rep. Dale Kooyenga took it down and put it in his office. His action prompted a police scolding about respecting others’ property, but he wasn’t cited. Kooyenga told The Associated Press on Friday that he took the sign because it called Republicans “a bunch of gropers” and “damn all Republicans.” He said the language was offensive. A photograph shows the sign actually described President Donald Trump as a groper and referred to all Americans as damned. Kooyenga on Monday blamed the discrepancy on giving an interview via cellphone while driving and it having been two months since he’d seen the sign.
