7-19-17 fdl county sheriff’s office continues investigation into fatal head on collision

A Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s captain says a teenage driver survived a head on collision because she was wearing her seatbelt.   Eighteen year old Olivia Schafer miraculously escaped serious injury when her car collided head on with a drunk driver, driving the wrong way on Highway 151 south of Fond du lac over the weekend.  Waldschmidt says the at fault driver was not wearing a seatbelt and did not survive the crash.  “There’s drunk driving we believe or at least consuming alcohol before getting behind the wheel,”  Waldschmidt told WFDL news.  Waldschmidt says Schafer was driving home from work and was almost home when the crash occurred.  Waldschmidt says Schafer had little time to react, not realizing until the last second that a drunk driver was head straight for her.  “I think its anybody’s worst nightmare.  We do get calls occasionally of cars going the wrong way on 151 or even Interstate 41 for that matter but usually the drivers figure it out quickly and turn around.”
