Fond du Lac city officials say residents who pay their water bill online should check their credit card statements after the city’s Water Payment Portal was hacked. A notice on the city’s website says city officials are investigating after they were notified about the hack by a local partner bank last Tuesday. The notice says the city had patched a vulnerability after its vendor third-party payment engine notified the city of the vulnerability back in October. The notice says there is a possibility that customers who paid their water bills online between August and October could have had their credit card numbers compromised. City officials say during its investigation, they found the only data that has been skimmed is the credit card data and no other identifiable information has been skimmed. Most purchases have been for small amounts at places like iTunes, Dunkin Donuts and other mobile/online payment portals. The city took down the online water payment December 13 and customers are asked to either pay in person, mail in water payments or use one of the drop boxes at the government center.
