A Berlin foundry has been ordered to pay medical costs and a $200,000 fine after exposing workers to asbestos. As part of a deal with federal prosecutors Grede LLC pleaded guilty Thursday in U.S. District Court to violating the Clean Air Act. The company acknowledged plant supervisors ordered workers to clean an asbestos-filled industrial oven in January 2012 without providing them adequate protective gear or following procedures for removing the cancer-causing material. Charges against the supervisors were dismissed as part of the plea deal. Grede closesd its Berlin foundry in June 2015, laying off more than 100 workers.
