MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Attorney General Brad Schimel isn’t mentioning he’s a Republican in his re-election campaign announcements. Schimel announced Thursday he’s officially running for a second term in a year where Democrats hope to channel voter anger toward Republican President Donald Trump into wins. He issued a news release announcing the run as well as an online ad touting his work to combat opioid abuse, human trafficking and elder abuse. The news release doesn’t mention Schimel is a Republican and a narrator in the ad calls Schimel “independent.” Schimel campaign aide Matthew Dobler didn’t immediately reply to an email asking why Schimel didn’t mention that he’s a Republican. Schimel has supported Trump and repeatedly touted lawsuits he’s filed against former President Barack Obama’s administration. Schimel and Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton last week filed a lawsuit challenging the Affordable Care Act’s individual mandate.
