The director of the Wisconsin Democracy Campaign says spending on Wisconsin legislative races last fall more than doubled from four years earlier. Democracy campaign director Matt Rothschild says spending by candidates and outside groups hit a record $36 milion in 2018. “Its kind of crazy. Individual legislative races that are really competitive, like some state senate races, candidates themselves have to raise more than $500,000 in the races combined with the outside groups top more than $1 million to buy a state senate seat,” Rothschild told WFDL news. Rothschild says the Greater Wisconsin Committee spend nearly $3.8 million supporting Democratic candidates and Wisconsin Manufacturers and Commerce spent nearly $2.1 million in support of Republican candidates. Rothschild says by far the vast majority of the money is spent on television ads.
