5-28-19 evers-education budget

As a former public school superintendent in Oakfield  and state superintendent,  Democratic governor Tony Evers says public education is a top priority in his proposed budget.  The governor wants to increase state general aid,  restore at least two-thirds funding of partial school revenues, and boost special education funding.  “Our budget includes an increase that’s significant covering areas that have been left essentially flat funded for years and years,”  Evers told AM 1170 WFDL’s Between the Lines program.   Evers says he is also concerned that so many students across the state come from poverty.  “We’re allegedly living in a time of good economic growth but it’s not equal across  the state or across the country,”  Evers said.  Fond du Lac School superintendent, Dr. Jim Sebert, says he supports the governor’s proposal.   Sebert says the governor’s special education proposal would have a significant impact in Fond du lac.   “For the Fond  du Lac School District, last year we transferred $8.9 million from the general fund into the special education fund because you have to fund those costs,”  Sebert told WFDL news.  “Its important that if we can continue to increase that amount of reimbursement, that allows us to have more money in Fund 10 that we can use for general operations for all students.”
