The League of Women Voters of Wisconsin is gearing up for a big celebration next month to commemorate the state’s 100th anniversary of the state’s ratification of the 19th amendment. League director Erin Grunze says Wisconsin was the first state in the country to ratify the amendment, which gave women the right to vote. She says the effort didn’t come easy. “Wisconsin is in the history books as being the first, but that’s a first by error, because Illinois had put together their paperwork but apparently there was an error in it and they had to redo it. Our paperwork came in first,” Grunze told WFDL news. The public is invited to the June 23 ceremony on the Capitol square.
