7-22-19 pilot makes emergency landing in fdl county farm field

A pilot flying to the EAA escaped injury when he landed the plane in a soybean field in Fond du Lac County.  A 74 year old United Kingdom man was flying the 1945 Piper J3C-65 Sunday afternoon from Lake Crystal, Minnesota to the EAA Sea Plane Base near Oshkosh when he reported instant loss of power and was able to safely land the plane in a soybean field southwest of the intersection of STH 44/49 and CTH KK.  There was no reported damage to the plane and no reported injuries.  Investigation into the emergency landing determined that an incorrectly installed gas cap resulted in the loss of engine power.  The plane was removed by Meyers Aviation of Oshkosh and transported to Big Green Lake where it was able to resume its flight to Oshkosh.   The Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by the Town of Ripon Police Department and the Federal Aviation Administration.
