The DNR has asked the city of Fond du Lac to test its wastewater treatment plant for polyfluoroalkyl pollution. The Fond du Lac plant is one of 125 municipal wastewater plants in the state receiving letters from the DNR asking them to sample and analyze water flowing in and out of the facilities for PFAS compounds. Fond du Lac Public Works director Jordan Skiff says its something the Fond du lac Wastewater Department has been tracking for several months. The substances are man-made chemicals that have been used for decades in products such as fire-fighting foam, non-stick cookware and fast food wrappers. Research suggests PFAS can decrease female fertility, increase the risk of high blood pressure in pregnant women and lower birth weights. Skiff says at this point the EPA does not have a federal drinking water standard for these contaminants.
