Two people were treated for non life-threatening injuries following a chlorine spill that forced the evacuation of a cheese plant in Fond du Lac County. Sheriff Ryan Waldschmidt says the incident happened shortly before 8am Thursday at the Saputo Cheese plant near Alto. Two employees who were switching chlorine cylinders were
exposed to the chlorine and had difficulty breathing. They were transported to Waupun Memorial Hospital by LifeStar Ambulance for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. The plant, which employs 125 people, was evacuated along with some neighboring homes. The employees were transported by bus to a community center. The Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Hazmat team was called to contain the leak and ventilate the building. Shortly before 3pm Thursday the building had been ventilated and the road was reopened to traffic.
