10-16-19 public safety referendum

The Fond du Lac Fire Chief says ultimately Fond du Lac residents will have the final say on whether they feel  its worth paying more in taxes for additional public safety staffing.    The Fond du Lac city council will starting evaluating fire and police staffing needs in January.  Fire Chief Pete O’Leary has requested six additional firefighters/paramedics to man a new ambulance.    His request is not included in a proposed city budget.  “As much as nobody wants to have new taxes, I believe that the need for public safety is one of the strongest pillars that any form of local government can have,”  O’Leary told WFDL news.  A referendum question could be placed on the 2020 presidential election ballot.  Adding a million dollars to the city tax levy would increase the mill rate by 33 dollars for the owner of a $100,000 home.
