The Fond du Lac Fire Chief says a residential fire this week is another reminder to properly discard smoking materials. Fire chief Pete O’Leary says fortunately the fire at 182 Chestnut Street caused only minor damage. The fire was started by a cigarette butt on the patio. O’Leary says if you are smoking outside your house, make sure the cigarette is completely extinguished before you go back inside. “These things happen, we get them every year, and its a great reminder to the public if you have to smoke, outdoors is better than indoors. But you want to make sure you completely extinguish whatever it is you are smoking before you go back in the home,” O’Leary told WFDL news. O’Leary says the fire on the patio had probably been smoldering for a few hours causing smoke to build up inside the house which set off the fire alarms alerting the residents.
