MADISON, Wis. (AP) — The head of Milwaukee’s election commission says at least 750 absentee ballots in his city have been rendered invalid because voters didn’t include a witness signature during the roughly 24 hours a federal judge said the requirement didn’t apply. U.S. District Judge William Conley on Thursday lifted the requirement that absentee voters need a witness in light of social distancing mandates. A federal appellate court reinstated the requirement a day later. State election officials say any ballot without a witness signature is invalid and the voter can’t cast a new one in any way.
