The Fond du Lac County Crops and Soils extension agent says farmers should be prepared for another late growing season. Joe Zimbric says fields are still saturated from last year’s record wet weather. Zimbric says he understands that after last year’s weather challenges farmers are going to want to get into their fields as soon as they can, but warns they can do more damage by going in too early. “We do know that if you go in a little bit early you have this high risk of compacting your soils,” Zimbric told WFDL news. “We want to make sure the field is ready so the bigger equipment we’re going to be taking across the field this spring, and all the farmers are aware of that.” So is this wet weather still unusual, or the new normal? “We’ve had a number of years stacking up where we’ve had wetter conditions, something that has been predicted by climate scientists for quite a while,” Zimbric said. “I hope every year is not going to be 2019, but a lot of our projections are telling us it’s going to continue to get wetter.”
