The executive director of the Wisconsin state Fair says while there were a number of contributing factors, the decision to cancel the state Fair this summer ultimately came down to public safety. Kathleen O’Leary told WFDL news after consulting with public health officials it was determined that the Fair could not be held safely during the coronavirus pandemic. “Excruciating, unthinkable, are the two words that not only come to mind but we certainly have said often over these last several months,” O’Leary told WFDL news. “This has been an excruciating, difficult process and certainly and excruciating ultimate decision.” O’Leary says Fair officials explored holding the Fair with restrictions, requiring fairgoers to wear masks, temperature checks and limiting crowds, but decided that was not practical.
