The executive director of Fond du Lac Festivals says the decision to cancel this year’s Walleye Weekend Festival was a difficult decision all around. After initially postponing the event to late August the Festivals Board announced last week that due to the coronavirus pandemic the event would be cancelled altogether. Fond du lac Festivals director Pete Wilke says the board felt the integrity and tradition of the festival would be compromised by holding even a scaled back event. “There’s a lot of people that are passionate about it and want to see it go on and keep that tradition alive,” Wilke told WFDL news. “…but as a board and after talking with a lot of community leaders and seeking guidance from public health officials we felt confident we were making the right decision.” Wilke says a family event is being planned for Lakeside Park in August that will take into consideration concerns raised by local health officials and details on that event will be released soon.
