The Fond du Lac School District Athletic director says he is confident that high school sports can move forward in a safe manner this fall amid the coronavirus pandemic. The WIAA board made the recommendation following a meeting Thursday. Fond du Lac school district athletic director David Michalkiewicz says it made more sense to start the season this fall rather than postpone until after the first of the year or next spring. “From my perspective I think it’s extremely important that we provide those opportunities to kids the best way we can and as safely as we can,” Michakiewiecz told WFDL news. “Obviously we’re never going to get rid of the risk but we’re going to mitigate the risk as much as possible and get kids engaged.” Michalkiewicz says discussions are still ongoing about whether fans will be allowed to attend sporting events. Michakiewicz says the district is working closely with the county health department to make sure the necessary safety precautions are being taken. The WIAA board recommended starting cross country, girls golf, tennis and swimming August 17, with high school football, soccer and volleyball practice starting the week of September 7.
