7-30-20 appleton man charged in fatal i-41 rollover crash in fdl county

An Appleton man has been charged in connection with a fatal alcohol-related rollover crash on Interstate 41 in Fond du Lac County.   Twenty year old Samuel Coppersmith made his initial Fond du Lac court appearance Wednesday on  nine counts including homicide by intoxicated use of a motor vehicle and homicide by negligient use of a motor vehicle.  Bail was set at $150,000 cash.  A preliminary hearing  is scheduled for August 7.   The crash happened shortly after 9pm Sunday July 19 on the northbound lanes of 41 just south of Townline Road.   A 22 year-old Appleton man and a 49 year-old Georgia man were killed in the crash.   Coppersmith and two other passengers were injured.  Investigators say the SUV was northbound on Interstate 41 when it drifted off the roadway.   As it began to come back onto the roadway the SUV rolled over multiple times.    Coppersmith was the only occupant wearing a seatbelt.   The northbound lanes of Interstate 41 were shut down between CTH OO and CTH N for approximately five  hours.
