12-18-20 waupun science teacher recognized

A Waupun science teacher is being recognized for going above and beyond to support her students and help them excel in learning.  Rock River Intermediate Sixth grade science teacher, Leigh Kohlman, is one of  five Wisconsin educator finalists for the 2020 Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science teaching.  “I’m really honored to represent Waupun area school district and the state of Wisconsin,”  Kohlman told WFDL news.  “I’m grateful for my students for the opportunity.”  Kohlman has been teaching science in the Waupun School District for more than 30 years and says she was born interested in science.  “Asking questions constantly as a child and I just haven’t stopped asking questions.”   So how does Kohlman get her students interested in science?   “Addressing where they’re at and their questioning.  Answering their curiosities,”  Kohlman said.  One teacher will be selected in math and one in science and will receive a $10,000 award from the National Science Foundation, and honored at an award ceremony in Washington D.C.
