Donald Trump’s historic second impeachment trial is opening this week with a sense of urgency. Democrats want to hold the former president accountable for the violent U.S. Capitol siege. And Republicans want it over as soon as possible. Retired Ripon College political scientist, Marty Farrell, says it seems unlikely that there are enough votes to convict the president. Many Republican senators have argued the trial is unconstitutional because Trump is no longer president, disagreeing with scholars who have studied the issue and say it’s valid. It appears there will be few witnesses, and Trump has declined a request to testify him. The House impeached him January 13 on the charge of inciting insurrection.
