3-30-21 alternate spring high school sports season

Wisconsin high school athletic officials are excited that student athletes who weren’t able to participate in fall sports because of the coronavirus pandemic are getting a chance this spring.  More than 100 schools, including Fond du Lac High School are playing football this spring.   Athletic director David Michalkiewicz says it feels great to be able to offer the opportunity to the kids.  “All of our kids that were in fall sports that got pushed back, almost 500 days from the last time they got to participate, and so those kids are getting the opportunity to compete and it’s not something we were sure was going to happen,”  Michalkiewicz told WFDL news.   Michalkiewicz says students who normally play a spring sport will be able to do both.  Wade Labecki  is the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association deputy director.  “It’s providing that opportunity for the kids so the seniors can have their last year of athletics and get those fall sports in,”  Labecki told WFDL news.   Labecki says during the course of the school year there have been no confirmed COVID-19  cases as a result of the competition.  “It’s more from the socializing and what goes on outside of the practice and outside of competition,”  Labecki said.  Football isn’t the only sport with an alternate spring season.  Swimming and volleyball are also underway.
