Despite multiple meetings with GOP senators the Biden administration has been unable to reach a deal on an infrastructure package with the very definition of “infrastructure” one of the roadblocks. Republicans generally want to limit spending to physical infrastructure, like roads and bridges, while Democrats are operating under a more expansive definition. Retired Ripon College economist Paul Schoofs says the overall size of the package and how to fund it is also standing in the way of a deal. Biden and Democrats want to finance the spending proposal with tax hikes on corporations and wealthy Americans, including rollbacks or former president Trump’s signature tax cuts, but Republicans are opposed , in general, to any tax hikes at all.
