The North Fond du Lac superintendent says he regrets not allowing the school board to vote on a mask policy, but says he made the decision when a special meeting devolved toward the end of the meeting. The meeting was called Tuesday to reconsider the district mask optional policy. “First off I want to say to the community that I am sorry of what went down. A lot of what went down is because of a lack of preparation on my part,” Sadoff told WFDL news. “My belief as we went into it (meeting) was that our community could handle these conversations and it would be civil and things would go well. That truly did not happened and it unraveled.” Sadoff says as the meeting began to unravel he made the decision to have the board not vote on whether to implement a temporary mask order. “What happened during the meeting is something I’ve never been a part of my whole life,” Sadoff said. “…you know I’m a Gulf War veteran, I’ve been through a lot of different things, but as the night went on some unruly and some not okay actions and voices were heard. As it went on I wasn’t able to keep it in control.” Sadoff says he decided to ask the board not to vote on the matter because he was thinking “What are we going to do the first day of school of people saying they’re going to sue, things are going to go wrong, their kids aren’t going to wear masks? I had to make a decision about what we’re going to do right now for the safety for today and tomorrow,” Sadoff said. “I’m not proud of what I did. I never gave the board members a chance to vote.” The following day two board members resigned their positions. Sadoff says he hopes everyone can learn something from the meeting. “It exposed something I was a little naive about…our community is very divided.” Sadoff says the community needs to come together. He says the school district will be working diligently to come out of this better than it was before.
