11-5-21 waukesha school district, superintendent under the microscope

For the second time since the start of the school year the Waukesha School District and it’s superintendent find themselves in the state and national spotlight.  Parents, teachers, students and community members gathered last week outside the school district building last week to protest district policies banning signs supporting LGBTQ students and Black Lives Matter signs, which they say has led to increased bullying.  One student said since the policy was enacted bullying and belittling of students like herself has increased.  While the administration has stated schools need to get back to educating students, she said the abuse is getting in the way of her education.   In September superintendent Dr. Jim Sebert  banned Black Lives Matter as well as pro-police signs and signs supporting the LGBTQ community.  He also suspended diversity training for staff members and the work of the District Equity Leadership Team.  At school board meetings in September and October dozens of people demanded the superintendent and board reverse those actions.  Speakers said since the superintendent’s actions, bullying and name calling have increased directed at all minority communities in Waukesha schools.  Earlier this fall the Waukesha School Board  reversed it’s decision to reject federal COVID funding for school lunches after receiving widespread criticism. Sebert is the former Fond du Lac School superintendent.
