The Fond du Lac County Board has approved the purchase of land west of the county Highway garage for a future jail expansion. The county is purchasing more than 54 acres of land for $27,000 an acre. County executive Al Buechel says the county is planning now for an expansion of the county jail that could still be five or ten years down the road. Buechel says architect and jail inspector recommendations say it is easier to expand at another location instead of the existing site. Buechel says projections in 2005 estimated a jail expansion would be necessary by 2025. Buechel says the jail inspector has identified some serious challenges with remodeling on the existing site.
