The Fond du Lac County Sheriff says the Fond du Lac County Jail follows FCC guidelines when it comes to charging fees for phone calls. Sheriff Ryan Waldschmidt was responding to a proposed bill that would stop county jails from charging excessive fees for phone calls by inmates. Waldschmidt says inmates in the Fond du Lac County Jail are charged 21 cents a minute for phone calls. Waldschmidt says because of visitation restrictions implemented during the pandemic the jail actually changed it’s phone policy to make an inmate’s first half hour of phone calls per week free. A report from the Prison Policy Initiative found that at least three Wisconsin counties charged over $14 for a 15-minute phone call.
