3-21-22 utv breaks through ice on lake winnebago

Nobody was injured when a UTV broke through thin ice on Lake Winnebago at Lakeside Park.  Shortly before 7pm Thursday rescue personnel were called to the park in the area of  Garden drive where the UTV had gone through the ice in about 3-4 feet of water about a quarter mile from shore.   Several occupants  were out of the vehicle and standing on the ice.  Fond du Lac Fire Rescue says  with recent rain and increased temperatures, the ice should be avoided for any recreational activities.  This UTV went through the ice in an area where there was no active crack and no visible hazards.  Ice thickness is approximately 8 inches that has been significantly weakened by the rains and increased temperatures and has become ‘honeycombed” this ice condition generally cannot support the weight of a person on foot let alone a vehicle.  Crews reported the ice “sagging” under their feet as they made their way to the submerged vehicle.
