Republican state representative Mark Born of Beaver Dam says it’s time to get tough on repeat shoplifters. The state Assembly recently approved a bill that would create a mandatory minimum jail sentence of at least 180 days in jail for anyone convicted of a third or subsequent shoplifting offense within five years. Responding to opponents who say it will lead to overcrowded jails Born says they will have to make more room. The measure is headed to governor Evers’ desk.
