A Fond du Lac man charged in connection with a swatting incident in the city of Fond du Lac last month has been bound over for trial. Probable cause was found at a preliminary hearing for 27 year old Derek Steckbauer on charges of false reporting of an emergency, resisting an officer and disorderly conduct, all as a repeat offender. Swatting is a prank call made to law enforcement in an effort to draw a large police presence to an address. Assistant police chief Jason Laridaen says in this case police were called March 14 to a local motel. Laridaen says the suspect told dispatchers a woman was being held against her will and that weapons were involved. Laridaen says that triggered a large response from local law enforcement. Laridaen says when police arrived it became clear relatively quickly that the call was a prank. Steckbauer is being held in the Fond du Lac County Jail on $5,000 cash bail.
