One person was transported to the hospital for smoke inhalation and two firefighters were treated for minor injuries following a fire that destroyed a Fond du Lac residence and damaged two neighboring homes. Shortly after 2am Sunday firefighters were called to a report of a house on fire at 23 West Bank Street where they encountered heavy fire conditions showing from the two and a half story home. Interim Fire Chief Erick Gerritson says high winds made it difficult to extinguish the fire. All of the occupants were able to escape the fire building, although one person was transported to the hospital for smoke inhalation. Two neighboring homes on each side of the house caught on fire sustaining moderate-to-major damage. The Red Cross is assisting residents of all three homes with temporary shelter. The cause of the fire is under investigation. Off-duty crews and neighboring fire departments through MABAS, were called in to assist in firefighting efforts and to provide coverage throughout the city. Two Fond du Lac firefighters sustained minor injuries and were able to return to work.
