The Fond du Lac County Clerk says absentee ballot drop boxes are safe and secure. Lisa Freiberg is reacting to the state Supreme Court ruling that the drop boxes may be placed only in election offices and that no one other than the voter can return a ballot in person. “Just like any other antiquated laws until a situation occurs they just sit on the books, people start interpretating things differently and all of a sudden we have this mess that we are in now,” Freiberg told WFDL news. Freiberg says often absentee ballots placed in a mailbox didn’t arrive in time to be counted on election day. The court did not address in its ruling whether anyone other than the voter can return his or her own ballot by mail. The decison sets absentee ballot rules for the August 9 primary and the fall election.
