The U.S. economy expanded at a 2.9 percent annual pace from October through December, ending 2022 with momentum despite the pressure of high interest rates and widespread fears of a looming recession.  Retired Ripon College economist Paul Schoofs says the slowdown was expected.  Schoofs says he anticipates the economy will slow further in the current quarter.  The economy got a boost last quarter from resilient consumer spending and the restocking of supplies by businesses.  […]

1-30-23 winter storm dumps several inches of snow on southeast wi

A winter storm dumped several inches of snow in southeast Wisconsin over the weekend.  Ten inches of snow was reported in Racine County and about eight inches at Milwaukee's General Mitchell International Airport.  Blowing snow made cleanup difficult.  The National Weather Service said snow rates reached an inch per hour at times Saturday evening and overnight, causing hazardous travel conditions. Highest snowfall totals were reported in Racine, Kenosha and Walworth counties.

1-30-23 dozens injured in massive pileup in southern wisconsin

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Authorities in southern Wisconsin say dozens of people were injured in a massive traffic pileup amid snowy conditions. The crash blocked Interstate 39/90 for hours Friday.   Beloit Memorial Hospital said at least 27 people were treated for injuries sustained in the crash. 1-30-23 ice fisherman dies on dane county lake

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Authorities have recovered the body of a 45-year-old fisherman whose ATV likely fell through weak ice on Lake Waubesa. The Dane County sheriff’s office says it was notified late Saturday that the man had not returned home as expected. The man's body was found overnight. His name wasn't immediately released.
