Data released from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention showed that after a two year decline in the number of suicides in the United States, those deaths went back up in 2021. Fond du Lac County Public Health Officer Kim Mueller says unfortunately that doesn’t come as a surprise. “Over this last several years, it doesn’t,” Mueller told WFDL news. “It’s what we’re hearing is occuring and Fond du Lac County isn’t unique it’s what we’re experiencing here as well.” The CDC specifically pointed out an alarming rise in the number of young Black Americans who have committed suicide over the most recent three-year period for which data is available. Suicide rates among persons aged 10-24 increased nearly 37 percent during 2018-2021 among Black persons.
